A descendant of Tory Quakers, radical Methodists and Czech-Jewish immigrants who spent most of his life in Madison, WI, Matthew studied philosophy and Chinese language at Kalamazoo College. He volunteered and taught English in Rhode Island for a year, after which he took a master’s degree in development at Pittsburgh. He currently lives with his wife and his newborn daughter in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, where he teaches English. Though a Slavophile-narodnik and a convert to Eastern Orthodoxy, he retains a sympathy for high-church Anglicanism. He blogs at The Heavy Anglo-Orthodox, where he meanders about theology, geopolitics, economics and heavy metal.
